As Malaysia transitions from NEM 3.0 to the new Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar ATAP), many homeowners are asking, should I go for ATAP or invest in a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)?

Here’s a simple breakdown to help you understand both options before you take the next step.

ATAP - Malaysia’s New On-Grid Solar Programme

Under Solar ATAP, your solar system remains connected to TNB’s national grid. Any excess energy your panels generate is exported back, but the new twist is in how you’re credited.

Instead of the old one-to-one offset, ATAP uses the System Marginal Price (SMP) — a variable rate that reflects the real-time cost of producing electricity in Malaysia.

In simple terms, SMP changes throughout the day:

  • When demand is high, the price (and your return) goes up.
  • When demand is low, you earn less for exported energy.

So while ATAP still lets you save significantly, your bill can’t be fully offset like before. Your savings depend on:

  • How much solar you consume directly during the day
  • The SMP value at the time your system exports electricity

It’s still an accessible and rewarding entry into solar savings — especially if you don’t plan to go fully off-grid yet.

BESS - Total Control, Total Independence

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) store excess solar energy during the day, allowing you to use it anytime — even at night or during power cuts.

Unlike ATAP, BESS systems are typically off-grid, meaning you don’t rely on TNB at all.

  • Full energy independence
  • Up to 100% bill savings (depending on usage)
  • No dependency on SMP or grid connection

The trade-off? A higher upfront cost, as battery systems are still relatively expensive — but they offer long-term peace of mind and total control over your power.

Many homeowners start with ATAP to enjoy instant savings, then upgrade to a hybrid or BESS setup later when battery prices drop, a flexible path toward full energy independence.

Key Things to Know Before You Decide

  • Is a Battery (BESS) Required under ATAP?
Not at the moment. Battery use is optional, though it helps increase self-consumption and savings.
  • What About Capacity Limits?
ATAP will include certain kWh limits depending on system size and connection type, final details will be outlined in the official release.

If you’re evaluating solar for your home or business, here’s your quick roadmap:

  1. Review your day vs night power use to identify your main solar-saving hours.
  2. Size your system to maximize daylight coverage.
  3. Compare battery options to estimate cost vs break-even years.
  4. Check with us for hybrid system proposals (solar + moderate battery + grid tie).

Stay tuned for the official ATAP guideline, expected by December 2025, which will clarify offset rules and technical requirements.
