The Net Energy Metering (NEM 3.0) Rakyat initiative has reached its initial 350 MW quota, fully subscribed by September 11, 2024. In response to the overwhelming demand, the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) has announced an additional 50 MW quota available from September 20 2024, until December 31 2024, or until fully redeemed.
This is the third time the quota has been extended under NEM 3.0 since its launch in 2021, a program that enables homeowners to generate their own solar power. Under this scheme, households use the energy produced by their solar PV systems first, and any excess is exported back to the Tenaga Nasional Bhd grid, effectively reducing electricity bills.
A major driver of the uptake is the Solar for Rakyat Incentive Scheme (SolaRIS), which provides a rebate of RM1,000 per kilowatt alternating current (kWac), up to a maximum of RM4,000. Since its launch in April, the scheme has boosted daily applications from around 100 to 150, highlighting the growing interest in solar energy among Malaysians.
With the recent announcement, it’s highly likely that this additional 50 MW allocation could be the final extension under NEM 3.0, providing what might be the last chance for homeowners to benefit from these incentives. As Malaysia moves towards higher electricity tariffs amid rising energy costs, adopting solar energy is an increasingly attractive option.
The NEM Rakyat initiative, running from 2021 to 2024, has already seen its quota extended twice before this due to high demand. This third and likely final extension is crucial for those looking to install solar PV systems, as it offers both financial savings and a way to contribute to a more sustainable energy future.
The initial 400 MW quota for NEM 3.0 was fully subscribed by mid-November 2024. Read the latest news here.
