If you’ve been following Malaysia’s solar energy scene, you probably came across the term NEM, or Net Energy Metering. It’s one of the main reasons solar panels have become such an attractive investment over the past few years. But what happens now that NEM quotas have run out?
Let’s explore the options, compare NEM vs SelCo, and help you make an informed decision—whether you’re just starting your solar journey or considering an upgrade.
Under the NEM program, users who install solar panels on their homes or businesses can export any extra electricity they generate back to the TNB (Tenaga Nasional Berhad) grid. In return, they receive energy credits, which can be used to offset their electricity bills for up to 10 years.
Key benefit: You’re essentially using the TNB grid like a free “battery” — storing your excess solar energy without needing to invest in an actual battery.
Unfortunately, as of now, NEM program ended and new applications are no longer being accepted until further notice from the government.
As the name suggests, Self-Consumption means you install solar panels purely to power your own usage. Any excess energy generated is not exported to the grid. Instead, you either:
Without NEM, you no longer get credits for excess solar energy sent back to TNB, making solar batteries an increasingly popular (though costlier) solution.
| Features | NEM | SelCo / BESS |
| Excess energy handling | Export to TNB grid (free credit) | Store in battery (or waste) |
| Credit lifespan | 10 Years | No |
| Battery needed? | No | Yes (for maximum benefit) |
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher (battery adds cost) |
| Availability (2025) | Fully subscribed | Available |
If you managed to get into the NEM program, congratulations — you’ve locked in a highly valuable, cost-effective solar setup for the next 10 years.
But if you missed out, don’t give up just yet.
While SelCo with battery storage does require a larger upfront investment, it offers long-term independence and protection against rising electricity tariffs. Plus, as battery prices drop and solar technology improves, SelCo may become the future standard for home solar systems.
